Consultation on applications for authorisation of regulated products: Three CBD products as novel foods

Overview

This consultation seeks stakeholders’ views, comments and feedback in relation to three CBD products as novel food applications for authorisation for use in food products.

Why your views matter

This consultation will be of interest to Scottish food businesses, Local Authorities and other stakeholders with an interest in food safety, food information and composition standards, including:

  • Producers and suppliers of CBD, novel foods, importers, distributors and wholesalers and retailers

  • Food industry trade associations covering novel foods and CBD

  • Consumer groups

  • Campaign groups with an interest in CBD and CBD food products

  • Local authorities in Scotland

  • Consumers and wider stakeholders.

A list of interested parties is included in Annex A of the consultation pack.

We are seeking your feedback and comments on the proposed terms of authorisation in relation to:

  • New authorisation of synthetic cannabidiol (CBD) as a novel food
  • New authorisation of cannabidiol (CBD) isolate as novel food
  • New authorisation of isolated cannabidiol (CBD) derived from hemp (Cannabis sativa) food

The Food Standards Agency have published a similar consultation for England and Wales.

In addition to this consultation, we have also published FSS/FSA safety assessments for the applications within the Risk recommendations document.

This consultation provides the opportunity for stakeholders to comment and express views on the applications for authorisation of the regulated products (referenced above). This is an opportunity for stakeholders to express views on these applications which Scottish ministers will use to inform their decision making. FSS considers this crucial to the process of transparent policymaking.

Further details can be found below in the consultation paper, the risk recomnedations paper and annexes.
