Consultation on applications for authorisation of regulated products: Four novel foods.

Overview

This consultation seeks stakeholders’ views, comments and feedback in relation to three novel food applications for authorisation for use in food products, and one extension of use application for an authorised novel food.

Why your views matter

This consultation will be of interest to all Scottish food and feed businesses, Local Authorities and other stakeholders with an interest in food safety. A list of interested parties is included in Annex A of the consultation pack.

We are seeking your feedback and comments on the proposed terms of authorisation in relation to:

  • Extension of use of the authorised novel food, Schizochytrium sp.oil rich in Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  • New authorisation of 2’-fucosyllactose (2’-FL) (produced from a modified strain of Escherichia coli W (ATCC 9637))
  • New authorisation of 3’-Sialyllactose (3’-SL) sodium salt (produced using a derivative strain of Escherichia coli W (ATCC 9637))
  • New authorisation of 6’-Sialyllactose (6’-SL) sodium salt (produced using a derivative strain of Escherichia coli W (ATCC 9637))

The Food Standards Agency have published a similar consultation for England and Wales.

In addition to this consultation, we have also published FSS/FSA safety assessments for the applications within the Risk recommendations document.

This consultation provides the opportunity for stakeholders to comment and express views on the applications for authorisation of the regulated products (referenced above). This is an opportunity for stakeholders to express views on these applications which Scottish ministers will use to inform their decision making. FSS considers this crucial to the process of transparent policymaking.

Further details can be found below in the consultation paper, the risk recomnedations paper and Annex A - Interested parties list.
